Unit 1 · Starting From Zero · 6 min
What is Java and why learn it?
Java is a popular, object-oriented programming language. Compiled Java bytecode can run on many systems with a compatible Java runtime.
Why this matters
Java is the language most BCA and BSc syllabuses use to teach Object Oriented Programming, and it is widely used in banking software, Android apps and large company systems.
Real-life analogy
Java code is like a document written in a language that has translators everywhere. You write it once, and each machine has its own translator (the JVM) that reads it.
Key points
- Java bytecode is designed to be portable across systems with a compatible JVM
- Java is object oriented: code is organised around objects
- Java is strongly typed: every variable has a fixed type
- Java manages memory for you with automatic garbage collection
Common mistakes
- Confusing Java with JavaScript — they are completely different languages
- Believing Java is only for big companies; it is a great first language too
Try it yourself
- List three features of Java in your own words.
- Name two real applications you use that may be built with Java.
